the letter “N”. It was always flown as a flaghoist when
entering and leaving port.
- C-Rations
WWII rations. Precursor of MEA (meals ready to eat).
- Captains Gig
Captains gig- small boat reserved for the captain and his
officers
- Captain's Mast
Held when needed for the captain to discipline any sailor
put on report.
- CH
A measure of a small distance.
- Chain Locker
The compartment just forward of the Bos'n locker that
holds the anchor chains.
- Chalk
Not for blackboards. Requisite part of sailors' equipment
to mask out dirty spots on favorite white hat to pass for
liberty call.
- Charley Noble
The galley smoke stack.
- Cherry Boysan
A West Pacific term for a sailor that never goes all the
way with women in port.
- Chief
The holder of real "power" on the ship below the rank of
Lieutenant JG.
- Chips
A carpenter or carpenter’s mate.
- Cindarella liberty
Liberty that expires at midnight.
- Chinese fire-drill
Total confusion! Related to an old U.S. Army term,
"SNAFU".
- Chinese landing
When a boat is brought along-side a ship "bow to stern"
rather than the accepted (traditional?)"bow to bow".
- Chit
Any request form. (also see "Red-Lined Chit")
- Chow
Anything "eatable", usually food served on the mess decks.
- Chow Hound
In Yiddish say "Fresser".
- Civies
Civilian clothes. Not allowed aboard ship. Had to be
stored at the 'Y'.
- Clear the Deck
To move on the double out of the area you are at,
especially if a mooring cable or line threatens to
stretch too far.
- Color Coding Acronym for Electronic Component Values
"Bad Boys Rape Our Young Girls But Violet Gives Willingly,
Get Some Now". Black, Brown, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green,
Blue, Violet, Grey, White, Gold, Silver, Nothing. They
represent, in order: Zero, one, two three, four, five,
six, seven, eight, nine, 5%, 10%, 20%.
- Combat Information Center
Combat: Combat Information Center (CIC). The nerve-center of any
warship.
- Commode
The toilet seat in the head.
- Cover
Your hat.
- Crossing the Line
The process whereby a "Pollywog" becomes a "Shellback"
through a most memorable meeting with King Neptune and
his court at the occasion of crossing the Equator.
During this event, the ship is taken over by said king
and existing shellbacks and the senior officers are
customarily nowhere to be seen.
