DD 478 (Fletcher class)
We are seeking information on the USS Stanly and her crews. Files and photos may be E-mailed to us and we will incorporate them into these pages.
Subject: USS Stanly, DD478 It was my pleasure last week to attend the reunion of the USS Stanly with my wife, youngest daughter, and my father, Robert K. Alexander GM 1c who served aboard from her commissioning in 1942, till he received enough points to get mustered out in 1945. In all 18 crew members were represented in person, and the event was held in Corpus Christi, Texas. We toured the Lexington and a memorial was held for 10 crewmembers who passed away during the last year. We also toured the Naval station at Ingleside, and went aboard a mine sweeper for a tour. I will pass this web site on to the person who does a newsletter for the Stanly, and they should be able to provide a lot of info. She was a well decorated ship, who was also part of DesRon 23, the ”Little Beavers.” From what I’ve learned the Little Beavers were the only Destroyer squadron to receive the Presidential Unit Citation in WW 2 She was hit hard at Okinawa, towards the end of the war. I have a question. How do I research my fathers service record, to find out what “Bars” he was entitled to? I have some I want to place in a shadow box I am making to place along with other items he had. Also, how do I tell what the current bars I have are from? Thanks.
