Reunion Notice:

Announcing the third informal get-together of U.S.S. Fanning mid 1970's snipes and friends.

When: July, 2 - 6, 2009
Where: International Falls, Minnesota
Contact: Harry Batdorf

This time it will be held in International Falls, Minnesota at Harry Batdorf's place in the country. We will be celebrating the 4th of July 2009 together between the 2nd and the 6th of July.

Some people are riding up on their cycles from places such as Florida, Texas, California, etc. Others may fly in to International Falls and some are arriving by car.

Accommodations include crashing in the house, tenting, and teepeeing. Others are asking about motels in town, but everyone is encouraged to stay at the house no matter how crowded it gets. We're thinking that ladies should stay in the house and use the shower facilities in the house. There will be a temporary outdoor hot shower stall and sink for sailors.

International Falls has a very nice small-town 4th of July celebration with a parade, fireworks, etc. There are resorts and taverns nearby at Rainy lake and Lake Kabetogama. There is a bear sanctuary. (Look at a map and google the town.)

We have three vehicles here for shuttling people around.

E-mail me at with ideas and questions.

Gary Brown writes an excellent essay of his time on board
Fanning and the Knox class Frigates in general.

I have received e-mail from Ergun Yolsever who was in the Turkish Navy and told us the FANNING had been decommissioned in 2001 and sent to a shipyard in Yzmir for the purpose of cutting up for scrap.

We are planning a reunion on July 23, 2005 (date of Commissioning in 1971), in San Diego, California. All past FANNING and ADATEPE sailors are invited. Information can be found here:
