The Greek vessel Thrace was sitting in Souda Bay, Crete
awaiting to be salvaged as scrap during the summer of 2003.
There was apparently a major lube oil fire and the interior
was destroyed.
Also in the boneyard was the former Richard E. Byrd and
some smaller destroyers. I was there to see them and have
some pics. I do not know the names of the older DD's.
The Byrd still had the name welded to the fantail and I
could read it when the pic is enlarged. The Trippe was in
a sad condition.
All the best ----- Johnny
