The ship was named in Honor of First Lieutenant Frank S. Reasoner USMC, killed in action - Republic of Vietnam. The first U.S. Marine to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for gallentry in the Vietnam War.

First five C.O.'s: CDR F.A. Velaquez-Suarez, CDR T.E. Fleming, CDR R.C. Ustick, CDR K.M. Ott, and CDR J.J. Gershon.
