I was the Doc on the Lang from early 1976 til I was discharged in July of 1977. Most of the crew will remember me as a quality musician, as well as Doc. I got out and went into recording music in Hollywood. But my westpac in 1976 is still one of the best memories in my life. My thanks to the whole crew for the wonderful memories.

God Bless America......

Mark,

Thanks for this site, it brings back alot of old memories. I was on Lang when she moved to Treasure Island. I used to work on the CIWS and Harpoon systems. I'd like to get in touch with any of the FCs/gunners from '85-'88. I have some pics from a Tiger cruise (I'm not sure of the date). I'll scan them in when I get a chance.

Mark,

I served in LANG as a USNR(TAR) following the LANG's transfer to the Naval Reserve Force. The ship was homeported at Naval Station Treasure Island, CA.

Events during this period. Arrial from six-weeks North Pacific cruise in time for the Great Quake in San Francisco of 89. The ship, with only 56 souls onboard, transited from the TI Pier under the command of Executive Officer, CDR Mitchell, (the CO was on leave) to a commercial pier down the bay on the San Francisco side. LANG had to tansit under the damaged Bay Bridge to the peninsula. As requested by disaster officials, the ship provided steam to a civilian power plant in order to bring their boiler feedwater temperature up and the plant back online. The action returned electricity to over 250,000 San Franciso residents from three to five days earlier than they would have had it without the ship's assistance. Photos from the period are very scarce, and I have none. I just found your site and will scour my collection to see what pictures I do have of the ship.

I served as the Anti Submarine Warfare Officer during the 1973/1974 overhaul at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard, and during the 1975 Deployment. During the overhaul we installed one of the first rubber "windows" on the sonar dome as well as the initial outfitting for a LAMPS Helicopter.

During the deployment we escorted the USS Coral Sea for most of her deployment and were involved in the evacuation of Saigon as well as the rescue of the SS Mayaguez. I still have my copy of the deployment cruise book and if you would like me to scan all or parts of it, let me know.

Joined pre-commission crew in January 1970 fresh out of sonar school in Key West.

I still have the plank owner plaque. Went through one West Pac cruise in 1971. Left the Lang in 1972 to join another pre-commissioning crew with the USS Barbey. They were called Destroyer Escorts in those days.

I left the navy in 1974. There are a lot of not so young men I'd like to say hello to.

I do have pictures from the days on Lang. I will have to dust them off and try to remember the story of each.

This is a great way to touch base with long lost friends from years gone. I will pursue my collection of memorable junk to see if I may contribute to the cause.

I served as first lt, Deck Division. I was really saddened to learn they turned my old home port (Long Beach) over to the red Chinese.

Glad to find the Lang hasn't been forgotten. She was a fine ship.

I served aboard the USS Lang from 1975-1978. That last year we were in dry dock in Portland, mainly because our sonar dome broke down while we were out to sea. I was an ETN2 (E-5) and was LPO for much of my duty on board. Toward the end, ETN1 Baker took over a few of my duties.

I was wondering if or how I can get in touch with guys from my department during those 3 years. Any reunions, etc.? Is there a master log of personnel during those years available?

That's all for now thanks,

Art Hubacz

From: Ed Treffery

The attach picture is when the USS Lang went below the Equator to a small Polynesian group of Islands called the Gilbert Islands. The largest Island being Tarawa. Any W.W.II historian will remember Tarawa being one of the bloodiest battles of the South Pacific.

After the war the islands were a British colony and in 1979 gained their Independence from Great Britain becoming the new country Kiribati. Naval vessels from England, Australia, New Zealand and United States filled the small harbor. The ceremony consisted of Honor guards from each country with The USS Lang's Honor guard representing the United States. The ceremony completed when Princess Anne transferred governmental control over to the the new form of local Parliament.
