CDR David M. Foss
Commanding Officer
U.S.S. Connole (DE-1056)
April 1971 - August 1972

The first deployment

Unfortunately, Commander Foss died in 1974 and personal details of his tour of duty are not available. Under his command the USS Connole made its first work-up for deployment which involves many months of training and readiness exercises as an individual unit and in conjunction with other ships of the carrier squadron. The USS Connole then deployed to the Mediterranean Sea for a six month period as the AS W escort for a carrier battle group. During this period, there were many arduous days of searching for submarines in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and eventful ship handling exercises as part of the carrier group.
