DD 849 (Gearing class)
We are seeking information on the USS Richard E. Kraus and her crews. Files and photos may be E-mailed to us and we will incorporate them into these pages.
My Father (RIP) was stationed on this destroyer in the early-mid 60ís. I would like to gain more information about his days in the Navy, and would also like to submit as much info and pictures as possible. Please email me back so I know I have the correct email address, and we can possibly work together. He has a scrapbook that my Mother saved when he died, and it had a good number of old pictures from his days onboard that ship. He might have more, but Iíll have to get the book from my Mother. Let me know what I can do to help, and also to get in contact with people on board during the same years.
Thanks so much for your time.

USS Richard E. Kraus DD 849
Richard, here is a photo of the Kraus and the German Destroyer Hesson D184 tied up pierside in Rosyth Scotland at the British Naval Base. This was taken in the fall of 1970 and comes from the Cruise book.
Both ships were part of the STANAVFORLANT [ NATO ] fleet for that summer and fall. What I remember most about the Hesson, other than the prodigious quantities of beer that were consumed on her every night inport, was the hail of projectiles small and large that she could produce during training exercises. The pilots pulling drogue targets earned a healthy respect, if not outright fear of her. The fear coming in after one exercise when she parted the target tow cable very, very close to the aircraft.
