ST. Elmo's Fire

In the year 44 and in September
Only the hour I don't remember,

The night was like vampires shroud
Enfolding  our destroyer-so proud.

Thunder heads were piling high
On either side into the sky,

The sea was calm with inkish cast
Sensing  a storm would break at last.

As I recall it--the mid was on.
Mr. McGuane the man at the conn.

Out of the night as if with fright
Lookouts reported a ghostly sight -

Aflame, the mast with weirdest hue
Exactly what caused it--no one knew.

Some thought lightning--it was not
Where lightning strikes--chaos is wrought.

No scar--no mark did it leave
But a slash in the night as a knife would cleave.

Handed down by salts of old
Similar stories have been told

Of weird flames playing on the decks
Whos actions have brave  men perplexed.

Now it came by its name I do not know
But I can say 'twas  a striking show.

So to remember it thus they gave it a name -
Born on the sea it has gone to fame

And if this name you so desire.
It is called St. Elmo's Fire.
