DD 765 (Gearing class)
We are seeking information on the USS Keppler and her crews. Files and photos may be E-mailed to us and we will incorporate them into these pages.
The E-mail: 8/4/05: Hello Mark: I just discovered your nice site, and added my name. I want to offer a minor correction to the "History" of the Keppler. Regarding the Keppler's participation in the 1962 quarantine of Cuba, we followed the Russian submarine and trawler to a point northwest of the Azores; they continued to the northeast, and WE went to the Azores to refuel before heading home. Attached is a photo of us arriving in the City of Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel, Azores. Your website mentioned good books on destroyers, and I have another suggestion. The book, "Destroyers - 60 Years", published by Rand McNally in 1962, is a nice history of destroyers to that date. The printing/binding of the book allowed for the addition of a special-order section on individual destroyers. That is, my copy contains a nice section on the Keppler including a section on its history similar to the history on your website up until 1962, photos of the ships officers and divisions, and other action photos taken during our 1962 Mediterranean cruise. I have attached copies of the book jacket and title page. I was glad to get the post-1962 history of the Keppler from your website, but it would be nice to get the entire story. I recall hearing that it had been given to a foreign navy. I would love to learn about its final days. Best regards,
Fred Nichols
