We are seeking information on the USS De Haven and her crews. Files and photos
may be E-mailed to us and we will
incorporate them into this page. When enough information has been assembled
we will then build the ship her own section.
The E-mail:
June 7, 2005
Dear Sir,
I am writing in an attempt to provide you more information; however, I am limited in what I can
appraise you of. I work for a cable access station in Brockton. Massachusetts. We recently interviewed
a veteran by the name of James Garrison (I believe of Abington, MA) for the
Library of Congress' Veteran's History Project. During the course of the interview I learned that
Mr. Garrison, a 30 year veteran of the navy, was at Pearl Harbor during the fateful morning on Sunday,
December 7th. 1941 and served on the DeHaven at the time of her bombing and the Meredith at the time of
her sinking. Mr. Garrison brought with him two booklets assembled by a local publishing group (the
booklets were essentially 100 pages or so of what appeared to be photocopy quality paper inside a
simple binder). These booklets had information and photographs such as ship logs leading up to their
sinkings and photographs of the vessels in shipyard and at sea (of special interest was a photograph
taking of the Meredith from a tug that had pulled along side of the stricken vessel showing the destroyer
broken in two her aft and bow floating separately. Whoever published these booklets must be able to
provide a resource of where they received the documentation and photographs for republishing.
I may be of some more reference but honestly only have a few more facts I did not share here.
I merely wanted to add what I did know believing your efforts are important to history, the
veterans, and their families alike.
If I can be of anymore assistance please let me know.
Sincerely,
Matt Walker,
Operations Coordinator of BCA
